I use the 5 gallon 20 lb tanks. If you can get your hands on a gallon milk crate they fit perfect in there and easy to secure that way. Check out my ad on the classifieds section. Amazon has some pits on sale as well.
 
I thought I wanted something small on the boat BBQ.. the first time I took it to be filled they charged as though I had a 20 pounder. Seems some places have a 20 lbs minimum.

Might be something to remember.
 
I toss a 20lb bottle in the bed of the truck next to the fire pit. No idea how long it lasts but I didn't empty it on a 10 day trip last summer using the pit every night for a couple hours.
