Border checkpoints to consider in trip planning

I guess on this one we just have to agree to disagree. My views are probably influenced by years in municipal law enforcement and training with multiple state and federal agencies. I’m partial to folks doing the job but thats probably a result of my personal experiences.

I remember being on an rv trip and we were going to drive across the Hoover Dam. This was probably right around 9/11, but I just cannot remember but had to be before they closed it. There was a checkpoint and they asked if we had guns, explosives whatever, and asked if they could come aboard and do a search. Yes, come aboard, open whatever you want. I will always allow a search as these men and women risk their lives to protect us, why not make their job easier.

We drove through the Las Cruces check point last spring. He just waved us through.

We were pulling our TT at 11:00 at night to Tucson and ran across this checkpoint. He never asked if we had anything in the trailer he should know about, and just asked us where we were going. We could have had 75 illegals packed in there and he could have cared less.

@offroader09 thank you for pointing out just one more way people are willing to forfeit their rights!

A constitutional lawyer, or sheriff could enforce 4 violations of constitutionally guaranteed rights, just in this one post. Not including two precieved broken laws that did not break constitutional law!!!

I believe people need a legal (constitutional) education!!! Before it's to late for our children!!!

They already knew whether anyone was in your trailer or not. They have very sophisticated and powerful thermal scanners (and probably other technologies) you drive past at the check points.

Agents may search any person, the inside of any vehicle, and all passenger belongings. Agents do not need a warrant, any suspicion of wrongdoing, or consent to do any of these things. CBP's own policy requires that searches be “conducted in a manner that is safe, secure, humane, dignified and professional.”

I have gone through the check points spoken about many times and have never had a single issue. Especially those check points are looking for anything and everything. They are looking for explosives, nuclear devises, radioactive material and on and on.
Especially today it is very easy to smuggle anything into the US. These folks are one of the first points to catch only God knows what being smuggled into the US.

As a kid my family very regularly went to Juarez to shop, have lunch and so on. My dad was very specific every time we came back across we declared everything cigarettes, booze, food, clothes... When asked about our citizenship every time we said American. Being a smart ass would be a really bad idea then.

Those check points are there to protect you.

It has been awhile since I've seen someone hauled off in handcuffs!! LOL
They are just doing their job. Give them reason and they can go thru your stuff all day long!

The fact that border patrol can “Search” your “motor home” makes this a very disturbing and long, legal conversation. Gonna have to ask the question that applies to every “vehicle”; never allow a search and never allow anything to cause a visual reason for one. That’s the standard 2A training.

For a “border agent” to come INTO your RV, I still have to fall back onto your 4A Rights to protect you from illegal search and seizure. I wouldn’t expect a US agent to be corrupt as to breach that Right. Now…a Mexico agent? All bets are off the table…Along with your Rights.

Our friends were inspected (for over 2 hours) at the Canadian Border and ended up with a broken bay door that had to be Duct Taped closed!

They found out that the border entry rules can change by the hour, and ended up losing all the poultry and dairy products.
