Fortunately they redesigned this in 2020, no step down. Both grey and black 3” on Dutch Star and above.
 
It is stupid and they finally stopped it. It's also not "healthy" for the gray as you can get a good drain flow that helps clean it. Imagine a toilet slow to drain.
 
I would have gladly paid the extra $7.28 in parts for them to install a 3” as an option.
 
You must be throwing the tennis shoes in the washer after you walk on the beach.
I don’t think I have ever thrown any pair of shoes in any washing machine.

No we don’t but since it had started draining so slowly, we did leave it open otherwise we would get to a full tank and it would take over an hour to drain.

In retrospect, that probably didn’t help matters much. Prior to the slow drain, we would never leave our tanks open and now that it is draining normally again, we continue to keep it closed.
